Mahler Kindertotenlieder - Veldhuizen Luisi 20210514
Fabio Luisi leads the Concertgebouworkest in Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and the Kindertotenlieder, featuring the acclaimed baritone Peter Mattei. The young Dutchman Rick van Veldhuizen wrote a newly commissioned compostion for the orchestra.
Masterpieces by Gustav Mahler
Fabio Luisi conducts two masterpieces by Gustav Mahler. The Swedish baritone Peter Mattei, who has often garnered acclaim for his interpretations of Mahler, joins forces with Luisi and the orchestra in the compelling song cycle Kindertotenlieder. Then follows Symphony No. 5, which the Concertgebouworkest has performed many times since the Netherlands premiere under the baton of the composer himself in 1906. Mahler had close ties with chief conductor Willem Mengelberg. While several conductors would confer a tragic character to the Adagietto, this was not Mahler’s intention: Mengelberg insisted that it was a pure declaration of love to Alma, Mahler’s wife.
